I had thought I lost this. This is still a rough draft from an outline and just in its beginnings but it will be I guess a horror story sort of or maybe more of a thriller. Now I am posting and excerpt of a revised version.

Note: I actually finished this book. Some of the names changed but Maeve remained the main character.

THE EDGE OF ETERNITY

CHAPTER 1

A REALITY CHECK

The wind was exhilarating as she rounded the curve. She was in a downhill run for the finish line and she could hear the crowds cheering. This would be Maeve’s first win in Northern California and she was so excited. Maeve crossed the finish line and stopped her bike. Throngs surrounded her as she took off her helmet. She had become the Western Regional champion. It was well deserved considering all the hours of training she had put in when there really weren’t many spare hours for her to train. She was dedicated and used every extra moment to prepare for a day like this day. Now that the race was over she had decided to take a break from competition for awhile.

“Congratulations,” said her brother Gareth giving her a big hug.

“Thanks Gareth, that means a lot coming from you.”

Maeve had moved from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho about three years prior and into the fast paced lifestyle of Orange County, California with her family. She wasn’t use to traffic jams or preoccupation with clothing and movie stars. Jeans and a tee-shirt with her long hair pulled up into a ponytail was her idea of everyday dress. She wore very little makeup but she really didn’t need it because she was naturally stunning.

Los Angeles was less than an hour away. ‘Home of the Stars’ is what they called it but, for Maeve, there were no stars, just home sickness for the wide open spaces.

Yet, even though born on the East coast of the United States, Maeve’s thoughts were steeped in her Irish heritage. She was 3rd generation Irish, born in the United States. Her parents had moved to Idaho when she was very little and her Father had a successful architectural firm with offices in many major cities. They had decided to move to Southern California where he had a very successful branch office and buy a home. They loved the climate and the beach so it was ideal to move all of the family there. It was after a couple of years that their Father decided to retire and let Gareth take over the firm. It was true he did spend time working in the bicycle shop which was more of a hobby for him but his major occupation was in his father’s footsteps as an architect.

Maeve walked into her house and heard a noise in the back of the house near the kitchen. She walked into the kitchen just as a man was going through the back door.

“Hey,” yelled Maeve and chased after him out the backdoor but he was too fast for her. He disappeared into the shrubbery somewhere, if it was a man. Maeve didn’t really know. She called the police and about an hour later they showed up.

“Miss McLaughlin was anything taken to your knowledge?” said the officer.

“I don’t know? I haven’t had time to really check. I only saw the intruder in the kitchen and went outside after them. They had a stocking over their head and dark clothing and average height so it could have been a man or a woman. That’s all I can tell you.”

“You didn’t check while you were waiting for us to get here?”

“Actually no, I thought it was better to wait until you got here.”

“Do you have any valuables in this house?”

“Nothing we consider that valuable. We have certain collectibles from places my parents have traveled and my Mother has some family heirlooms and jewelry but nothing outrageously valuable,” said Maeve. “I have trophies and ribbons from my competitions.”

“Why don’t we take a little walk around the house and see if you find anything missing or out of place, said the officer who by now had introduced himself as Officer Cramer.

Living in her parent’s home was actually a luxury since there was no rent to pay. Maeve’s parents were old fashioned and family was always welcome to come home and money was never an issue. Home was home forever. It was the custom in their family that children live at home until they are married. They all respected their parent’s old world custom and to keep the peace they always endeavored to please their parents. Consequently, they all moved together and lived together.

Her parents spent most of their time traveling and were often away enjoying the scenery at some exotic spot. This was ideal for everyone else who would come and go as they liked with no one usually bothering them about the time of day or night they sauntered home. They were all adults and could maintain home life pretty well without their parents there all the time. The arrangement was agreeable for all of them except at the moment it wasn’t that convenient. Maeve always knew where to call her parents but she was uncertain whether to call them or let it go as some freak incident.

“Miss McLaughlin do you see anything out of place?”

“No,” sighed Maeve, “I don’t but I really don’t know where to look. This is a big house.”

“I think we should check the small house in the back. The back house may have been the actual target and the bigger place an after thought. You never know with burglars.”

Gareth and his wife had moved into a private cottage behind the main house which was suppose to be servant’s quarters but their Mother chose to have no servants. It was just arrogance that the house even had a servant’s cottage since they knew many in Idaho with farm houses just as large and no servants to help. It was a nice home but not exactly a mini mansion.

“Okay,” said Maeve, “my brother lives in the back but I don’t know if he is home. If he’s not home, then we are out of luck because I don’t have a key for his house.”

They went around back but she didn’t need a key. The front door was standing wide open. Someone was lying on the floor just inside the door.

“It’s Gareth,” screamed Maeve running inside.

She looked for a pulse and yelled, “He’s alive, please call an ambulance.”

The ambulance arrived and said that Gareth had a head injury and would need to have at least an MRI to see how severe his injury was and also they needed to check for any internal injuries. He appeared to have gotten into a scuffle with someone.

“Who can sign for admittance for your brother?”

“His wife can but she is at work. I will call her and tell her to go to the hospital. Did they say which hospital they were going to take him?”

“Yes,” said Officer Cramer, “Harbor Regional. We are going to leave now but we want you to come down to the station in the morning because we have further questions.”

“I’ll be there around ten o’clock,” said Maeve. “Excuse me now I need to get hold of Krista, Gareth’s wife.

Officer Cramer and another officer that was accompanying him left. Maeve went over where she had left her bike sitting and got onto it. She was going to make the ride into town and to the shop and call Krista from there. She was only a few blocks away and they could go to the hospital together and Sean as well if he wanted.

Maeve parked her bike in a backroom behind the store and entered through the back entrance. Her Father had it built onto the building especially for her so she could ride her bike rather than drive her car to keep in shape.

Once inside, there was Sean in his usual spot talking on the phone to one of his female admirers.

“No, it’s not like that!” “I was only being polite. I have no interest in the woman,” said Sean in an exasperated and thoroughly disgusted tone, “my sister is here now and I have to go. No, we can talk about it tonight at Drake’s. Bye Laura, my sister is here now and of course me too.”

Sean hung up the phone and turned to Maeve. “Hi sis, what’s up?”

Maeve was a very athletic girl, only 20. She had many hobbies that all related to the out-of-doors. She worked in the bicycle shop embellishing the bikes either with decals or painting. She was a good artist but had no free time for what she thought of as useless pastimes. She was use to the ride into the shop, so she had gotten there quickly.

“We have a problem said Maeve. Someone broke into the houses and Gareth got into a fight with them and was hurt. He is in the hospital. I chased after them but they got away through the bushes. I rode down here to call Krista and give you some help if you wanted to close up shop and come along. They don’t think it is serious but they won’t know until after his MRI.”

“Well of course, yes, I’ll close the store. Go in the back and call Krista and I’ll close out the register and get everything locked up.”

“What’s wrong with you Sean? Is this thing with Laura stressing you out? You look awful.”

“I know, I know. Guess I’m just trying to calm down and diffuse the anger that I’m feeling right now. I’m going to have to break up with Laura tonight and I’m not happy about the prospect. She’s just too jealous and possessive for me and I’m not ready to settle down to the 9 to 5 lifestyle, let alone have kids. Maeve, she’s really weird and I’m looking for a more down too earth kind of girl. I’m really not into these Southern California gothic girls, although it looks like I might have to cancel meeting her tonight."

“Don’t worry about that until we see what the situation is with Gareth,” said Maeve.

Sean was always very shy and lived in his thoughts. He wasn't gay but when women showed interest he seemed aloof, even though they constantly pestered him for attention. He had girlfriends but they never seemed to be high on the list of his priorities. Regardless, he was always talking on the phone to one woman or another almost everyday. He was very good looking, 6 foot 2 inches tall with dark hair and bright, blue eyes. Women seemed to come in droves but he never took the bait until one day a girl came into the shop. The girl was Laura who was as dark in coloring as Maeve was light. She had pale luminous skin and very dark almost black hair. She was everything the word femininity described yet she just didn’t seem right for Sean somehow. She had a very negative undercurrent and was very possessive. He was beginning to notice her dark side and starting to be less enchanted than with his first few encounters with her.

Maeve came back into the front and Sean already had the closed sign up and was grabbing his jacket.

“Krista is very upset but she is picking us up in ten minutes. I told her we would be waiting out back for her.”

“Okay, but I almost forgot, said Sean, “a courier brought this in about an hour ago. I think it’s your plane tickets to Mexico. What are you up to now, Maeve? Anything I should know about?”

“Shut up, Sean. Quit needling me, said Maeve with a quick smile. You know I’m going cave diving. I have planned this trip for a year now. Have you forgotten?”

“No, but you might not be able to go if things get dicey around here.”

“I’m well aware of that. I wouldn’t think of leaving if Gareth is seriously ill. We’ll find out when we go to the hospital.”

One of Maeve’s passions was extreme sports and she was game to try anything new. Outside of this dangerous pastime, she of course was also enthused by her bicycling, but she also loved to ski and had thought many times of competing. Unfortunately she wasn’t up for anymore training schedules so she skied for fun only. Small vacations during the winter gave her the option to indulge in skiing at her favorite lodge. This was the extent of most of her social activity. When the summer months came around if not in some competition, she was off exploring a cave or hang gliding off some mountain, if there was any time for such activities. Underwater exploration had become her new pet interest. It was extremely dangerous so she had always gone on guided trips as was recommended by every diving organization.

This summer she had booked a guided excursion in Mexico to explore a cenote in the central part of the country. It was slightly remote but the guide was male and he had security going along. It was an approved dive by the government in conjunction with the US Diving Association. She could hardly wait and even though she was the female of the brood she was far more adventurous than her two brothers. Their favorite past time was talking about their female conquests until recently when Gareth got married. Now he was lying in a bed in the hospital.

“I see her Sean,” said Maeve.

Krista pulled up and Sean and Maeve got into her SUV. Everyone rode in silence until they reached the hospital.

Maeve opened the envelope and it was her plane ticket, Sean had been right. She was flying out Monday morning because the weekly rates for the dive were much cheaper than during the weekend. It wasn’t a cheap sport. The gear alone was outrageously expensive and the dive extremely dangerous. She wasn’t worried about that at the moment. Gareth was her older brother and she loved him and she wouldn’t leave if there was any chance he might be seriously injured.

They signed in and asked whereabouts of his room. They went up to the second floor and down the hall to his room. He was sleeping and a nurse was taking his blood pressure when they all walked into the room.

“Are you Gareth’s family asked the nurse?”

“Yes,” said Maeve, “this is his wife and he is our brother.”

“The doctor will be with you in just a moment. I am his nurse and my name is Carol. If you need anything just press the button on this switch.”

“Thanks,” said Krista.

The doctor came in shortly and explained the situation to the three of them. Gareth had a mild concussion, but other than scratches and bruises he seemed fine. They felt he should stay and be observed over night.

Everyone was relieved to hear the great news. They had sedated him so he would be asleep for hours. Krista was going to drive them all home.

Maeve decided to sit out on the porch for awhile, it was a clear night and she loved to look at the stars. She had to admit she was a night creature and even though she liked to be on the edge with her sporting activities, it was at night when she would come into her own. It was at this time she felt really alive.

Like most of the women in her family for generations, she had no idea of the attraction she had for the opposite sex. She was too busy with her work and sporting activities. She had a sense of adventure that was spurred on by an insatiable sense of curiosity. There was no doubt she stood out in a crowd standing at 5 foot 10 inches tall. Her eyes were eerie she had been told on many occasions; a very pale blue giving her such an unusual otherworldly look. She got tired of the constant comments so she decided to wear tinted contacts to make her eyes a darker blue. She bought two sets of them because the glare of the sun was hard on her eyes and she tended to be a little near-sighted during the day. This didn’t seem to affect her at night and her hearing was much keener or so she told everyone. It still was nothing out of the normal range as things go.

The only thing Maeve could be accused of as far as her appearance, was being vain about her hair that extended past her waist and was a very light shade of strawberry blond. Even though not overly tall like some models that stand over six feet or overly thin, she had that waif look until in the right circumstances you were surprised by her ability to defend herself and much better than most of the men she had dated. It wasn’t something she talked about with her dates, so most in the past weren’t aware of her skills. She had trained for years in various forms of martial arts, and had finally received a black belt in those that used a belt system. She had considered teaching but decided it wasn’t exciting enough.

Maeve’s brothers hated her penchant for healthful living and eating correctly; many arguments and taunts ensued over her eating light and mostly raw foods. She refused to eat pizza unless it was all grain and had vegetables on top. Once in awhile she would eat seafood but it was only on special occasions. Her brothers thought of her as extremely weird but they tolerated her eccentricities. Maeve’s weakness was wine and especially red wines. Her brothers treated her like a child even though one of them was actually a year and a half younger, but she thought it was amusing and didn’t mind unless she had a friend with her and they acted this way. There would be retribution in some devious manner if they embarrassed her.

Sean wandered out onto the porch after seeing Krista into her house and checking that all the doors and windows were tightly shut. She was going to look and see if anything was missing and then go to bed. She was on the verge of tears when he left.

“We’re going to have to talk to Mom and Dad about getting security systems for both houses. We can’t let this happen again. Krista is scared out of her ever loving mind. I told her she could call my cell if anything scared her tonight and I would be right there.”

“You’re such a nice guy, Sean even if you are my brother,” said Maeve grinning.

“Keep it up Maeve and I will mess up your tight little schedule you keep. You are so OCD sis and you know it.”

“Yeah, I go to the gym three times a week and generally get hit on by a bunch of guys with the IQ of 50. There was this one guy though, he was tall and dark but he was hiding something. I could see it in his eyes.”

“We all know you and your hunches. Can’t you stay out of trouble for once Maeve? Now is not the right time to go off on one of your junior investigator tangents.”

“So that is how you feel about me, a dumb blond running around pretending to be Nancy Drew? You know I like the coed gyms because of the atmosphere and it’s a place with a larger variety of equipment and interesting mix of people. I’m not looking for dates but I keep getting hit on. This guy is different, though. I don’t know what it is about him but I like it whatever it is. He is really hot.”

“No more, you are getting too personal now,” said Sean with a laugh. You know I will beat the hell out of him if he hurts you don’t you?”

“All talk and you know it Sean.”

“Right now I am concerned with Gareth all the rest is just nervous chatter.”

Maeve was tired from a good workout at her fencing class the night prior. She was following in her father’s footsteps taking fencing lessons Thursday evenings. He was a fencing champion and was still competing now and then. Her father was disappointed that neither of his sons took an interest in the sport but proud that at least Maeve excelled and had awards for fencing.

Maeve’s life was full but didn’t leave much time for fun. She was into so many activities not to mention running the bicycle shop with her two brothers that she rarely thought about a special person being included in her life. She usually was only one day ahead of her scheduled plans. These were frequent and kept her busy. Life was actually interesting but uncomplicated emotionally.

“Right now I’m going up to bed Sean. What do you think they were after? Do you have any ideas?”

“Nope, I don’t have a clue. I think I’m going to bed too. After what I went through just before I came out here on the porch I am so pissed off I need to just sleep on it.”

“What happened?” Said Maeve concerned.

“I called Laura to tell her what had happened and that I couldn’t meet her at the club tonight. She didn’t care and I hung up on her. That’s the end; I’m not even going to talk to her about our relationship because it is officially over as far as I’m concerned. Good night Maeve.”

Despite her brother’s distaste for the Goth look, in the evenings, she would often wear Goth dress; not too extreme and sometimes fetish wear but she was always conservative in this area and had an eye for good taste. She was sultry but didn’t have that dark look like most where she hung out. Heads would turn when she walked into a club in Los Angeles, which she did most every Saturday night and occasionally on other nights if she felt the need. She didn’t go often considering her schedule. This was the only time Maeve put on makeup that was noticeable. In the clubs, they called her Lady Maeve in honor of her Irish descent.

Sunday was the ten year anniversary of her favorite club being in business and finally her 21st birthday. A large gathering was planned with many well-known bands sharing the limelight. She was looking forward to the reprise from the daily grind of work and all her interests. Her friends had something cooked up for after hours and she was curious but ambivalent. Now she didn’t even know if she could attend her own birthday party.

Maeve found her nickname amusing since she was born in the United States and didn’t have an Irish brogue. On occasion, she would show off with a grin for those who did not know she was born in the US. Her Mother and Grandmother gave her a wealth of knowledge about Ireland through the years. She found it intriguing that she was named after a woman who was a Queen in Ireland of Cruachan

It was Saturday morning and Maeve had talked to Krista. Krista assured her that Gareth was fine and would be coming home that afternoon. She knew how long she had waited to go diving so she told her not to change her plans. She left for work still a little worried.

Saturday evening Maeve got home after work and went directly to her room. She wanted to be sure she hadn’t forgotten to pack everything she needed for her trip. She sat down to make a check list when her phone rang. She answered and it was the Diving Association who was sponsoring the trip. In fact it was Andres who would be her diving guide on the phone.

“Hello, Maeve, this is Andres, I have some bad news for you. We are cancelling the dive in Mexico.”

“What happened?” said Maeve.

The climate has gotten dangerous, not only the physical climate but the governmental climate. There have been shootings and kidnappings near this area. They are saying it is the drug cartels and many are grabbing and killing Americans on sight. It is just too dangerous for us to sponsor any sort of dive in Mexico. We don’t know if and when we will ever sponsor one in that area. We will let you know if you are still interested. Since we got you the discount rates for your tickets we will be making sure you get a refund as soon as possible. Please come into our offices on Tuesday. We most likely will have your refund at that time.”

Maeve was speechless. She managed to mumble, “I understand and I will talk to you when I come into your office on Tuesday or it may be Wednesday. I am dumbfounded and not really sure at the moment when I can come into L.A. but it will be the first part of the week.”

“That’s fine, just give us a call when you are on your way and we will be looking forward to seeing you. We are so sorry for your disappointment but it is in the best interest for all concerned. Goodbye.” Andres hung up.

Maeve sat there on the side of her bed staring at the phone in her hand. She was so disappointed she couldn’t move. She thought she was being silly and hung up the phone thinking there will always be another place and another dive but it didn’t seem like it at the moment.

Maeve stood up and looked at her duffle bag and equipment setting by the door. She knew she wasn’t going to unpack then and there. She needed to get out but she had no idea where she would go. She grabbed her purse and jacket and hurried out the door for destination unknown. She had just reached for the door handle on her car when someone came up behind her and put their hand on her shoulder.

“Oh it’s you Sean. You scared the hell out of me.”

“Where are you going so late sis?” He said looking at her with concern in his eyes.

“I really don’t know, said Maeve. I just need to get out. They cancelled my diving excursion because of violence in Mexico, and with what happened to Gareth I need to get out of here for awhile. I thought I’d take a drive.”

“Come with me Maeve. I am taking you to the club for a drink even if you don’t usually drink. I know how you were looking forward to the dive. There will be another dive or something else interesting will turn up. You have the most diversified area of interest of any woman I know. You will find something I am sure and if not, we can just get shit-faced together,” he said with a slight laugh.

Maeve was hesitant but she thought what the hell and went along with her brother. She wasn’t sure where she was going but she thought he meant the club in Huntington Beach. It was a place where most of his lady friends had never been taken. There he could be himself and not have to get into any drama with any one of them. He seemed to attract the clinging vines and he was so naïve he didn’t recognize it initially. He was flattered by the attention yet he was also barely interested in any woman except Laura recently. She turned out to be a bad tasting pill he was having trouble spitting out.

It took about forty-five minutes to get there but the place seemed packed. She wasn’t that surprised since it was a Saturday night. She had changed into a black dress that was one of her favorites and let her hair down. She generally pulled it up in a ponytail for work but when she went out it was usually down.

A couple came up to them and said, “Hi Sean, I heard about your brother. I’m really sorry. Have they caught the intruder yet?”

Maeve remembered, she should have gone into the police office that morning. She’d forgotten. She’d go in early Monday morning. How could she forget she thought to herself? It must have been the aftermath of so much drama going on. It wasn’t like her to forget important things.

“As far as we know they don’t even have any leads,” said Sean. I almost forgot, Derek and Lily, this is my sister Maeve.

“Hi Maeve, I’m really glad to meet you. Your brother mentions you often,” said Derek.

“Yes, quite often as a matter of fact,” said Lily grinning at Sean.

“Oh, is that so?” said Maeve flashing Sean a smile.

“Yeah,” said Sean, “but don’t make a habit of reminding me of that fact. I’m not a push over so you won’t get extra points for this revelation.”

They looked at each other and all of them laughed.

“Why don’t we all sit down at one of the tables? I think I saw one over in the corner where the music won’t be too loud,” said Lily.

The night passed pretty uneventful but she noticed a man sitting a few tables over and could swear he was the same guy that kept watching her at the gym. Why would he be all the way out here she wondered? She soon forgot about him when she got asked to dance. She was having a great time but she knew it was getting late and time to leave. She still had to go to her birthday party, in fact, three of them tomorrow. She was having a private brunch with her family if that was still happening, an afternoon party one of the friends from her martial arts school was giving and then her party at the club that night. Even on a Sunday the club would be packed she thought.

Tomorrow she would start to downsize her sports activities. She realized how someone’s life could be cut short and without warning. She knew this, everyone knew this but it was when it struck close to home that it really hit her in the gut. She was going to stick around home more. She rolled over in bed and went to sleep. It was going to be a long day and even though she didn’t like to be fawned over, she was looking forward to all the parties and people. It would be the last for awhile or at least she was going to try and limit herself to things she felt were more important now.

CHAPTER 2

PARTY TIME

Maeve woke up to the light shining into her eyes. She was so tired the night before she forgot to close her shades. She hated the light early in the morning. Looking over at her clock she realized it wasn’t that early. She loved the morning and her favorite thing to do before she got dressed was to put on her swimsuit and take a dunk in the pool.

It was already getting hot thought Maeve as she dived into the pool. Coming up out of the water she realized someone had sat down in a chair by the pool. Much to her surprise, she realized it was Gareth.

“When did you get here Gareth?” said Maeve. “I thought they weren’t letting you out of that joint until around noon or so today.”

“I made my wishes known in no uncertain terms. I had nothing life threatening wrong so they let me out last night. Krista could watch me just as easily as some over-bearing nurse.”

“You sure you should be up Gareth?” said Maeve with a slight grin. She knew how Gareth could be when his mind was made up. He didn’t like to be fussed over at all.

“I can’t help but ask this question,” said Maeve, “did you see what that guy looked like that attacked you?”

“Nope, I didn’t for about the hundredth time it seems. Besides, they didn’t attack me, I attacked them. I’m not sure if it was a man or woman but they weren’t over six feet tall. They were covered all over in black clothing and a face mask. I do know they are expert in some form of martial arts. I have never seen anything like it, said Gareth.”

“I forgot to go to the police station Friday morning. They wanted to question me some more. I’m going to go early on Monday. I didn’t do anything, I just found whoever it was in the house and tried to catch them. It was like they disappeared all of a sudden. This all seems a bit weird, don’t you think?”

“Yes, because they were looking at my book collection. It was like they were trying to find something in particular. They didn’t even go into the bedroom or try to get any electronics, nothing like that. Makes no sense but then it was a burglar, who knows what they wanted,” said Gareth.

I guess since they didn’t find what they wanted there they came into the house to look at Dad’s book collection but I don’t know. I saw them as they were trying to leave through the back door.

“Good thing you didn’t catch them. You could have talked them to death.”

“Shut up Gareth, you know I am well trained and I don’t talk anymore than you do,” said Maeve with an exasperated expression.

“Maybe so, but at times it seems like enough that my ears start ringing,” said Gareth laughing. “I’m just needling you Maeve. What’s happened to your sense of humor?”

“Nothing but I have gotten serious since you got hurt. I don’t know what I would do if,” said Maeve as the words got caught in her throat.

“Don’t worry hun, I can take care of myself and I’m fine. They just roughed me up a bit. This person, whoever they are, is very well trained as well and seems to know exactly what they were there to find. Obviously they didn’t find it. They may be back. I’m going to help Sean get security for the two houses. We need it, which became glaringly clear after this incident. Krista jumps at every sound now. Last night she was a bundle of nerves. I couldn’t calm her so I gave her one of my pain pills and it knocked her out. She got a little sleep but she’s scared.”

“I know she has been scared since the break-in. Well, I’m going inside and check my clothes. I have them all set aside for each thing today. “Oh to be so popular,” said Maeve laughing. Maeve walked away going back into the house.

Gareth was worried. He knew that the burglar was looking for something in particular. He was going to go through his books and his parent’s books and see if he could figure out what it was they were so intent on finding. Then he would be sure it was locked in the safe in the basement. They were fortunate to find a house with a basement in California.

Since Maeve’s parents couldn’t be there for her birthday they had hired a catering service to come in and make a fantastic brunch for her, Sean, Gareth and Krista of course. There was going to be something special arriving as well.

The doorbell rang and the catering service had arrived. Krista had come over from her house and was showing everyone where things went. They were astonished they had a sub-zero refrigerator but pleasantly surprised. Maeve was sent to her room to get ready and do whatever it was she usually would do. She wasn’t wanted in the middle of everything. After all it was her birthday and her day was going to be leisurely and fun. One day at least she wasn’t running around doing a million things and looking like she was going to pass out for a hundred years of sleep.

Maeve was excited she had to admit. They called everyone together. They had set up a long table decked out with a beautiful table cloth, linens, china and the works. Maeve couldn’t believe her eyes. Everyone else looked at each other and smiled at the expression on her face. A server came over and seated everyone and the food was served.

They were getting a pastry served as a desert when they heard another ring of the bell. Voices were hushed but as her parents opened the back door and walked outside. Maeve couldn’t believe it. She shrieked jumped up and went over to hug them. She was still a kid at heart when it came to them.

“What are you doing here? I thought you couldn’t make it back for my birthday.

“No honey, we didn’t think so but when we heard about Gareth and it was your birthday close to the break-in we made other arrangements so we could return for a few days. We plan on getting some security here and spend the rest of the time enjoying our children.”
